Constantinople representative arrives in Kiev

The preliminary date for the Unifying Council meeting is November 22

KIEV, November 15. /TASS/. Metropolitan Emmanuel of France (a representative of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople) has arrived in Kiev to head the Unifying Council on the creation of a unified Ukrainian Orthodox Church and election of its leader, the UNN news agency reports.

"Metropolitan Emmanuel of France has arrived in Kiev. Currently, details of the Council’s organizations are being discussed, and it is expected that he will head it," the agency’s source stated.

According to the source, the preliminary date for the council is November 22.

On the outcomes of the Holy and Sacred Synod held on October 9-11, the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople announced the decision to lift the anathema against leaders of two extracanonical churches in Ukraine - Filaret of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kiev Patriarchate and Makariy of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church. The Ecumenical Patriarchate also announced that it is starting the process of granting autocephalous status to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

In response to this, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church has made a decision to cease joint Eucharistic celebrations (joint liturgies) with Constantinople.
