Russian Union of Journalists helps diversify media opinions, says PM

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has congratulated members of the Russian Union of Journalists with its 100th anniversary

MOSCOW, November 14. /TASS/. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has congratulated members of the Russian Union of Journalists with its 100th anniversary in a telegram published on the Russian government’s website on Wednesday. The Russian PM noted that the organization helps diversify opinions in the Russian media.

"Journalists value their right to independent attitudes, deeds and opinions; they always feel constrained by the organizational framework. Your union supports diversity of opinions in the media and bases its work on respect to the author’s position, on the strict observance of ethical norms of the journalistic community," the message states.

Medvedev noted that the Russian Union of Journalists actively cooperates with international organizations and unions, and establishes direct contact with colleagues from different countries.

"It is important that your goals include the protection of the rights and freedoms of members of the media, the strengthening of the legal framework of their profession, resolution of controversial issues around mass media. Thanks to you, the level of professional education is improving, creative competitions are being held, and talented youth finds a good use for their skills," the PM stressed.

It is worthy of respect that the organization preserves the memory of their fallen colleagues and supports their families and loved ones, doing everything possible to avoid such tragedies in the future, Medvedev added.

About 100,000 people, 83 regional organizations and over 40 creative associations, guilds and unions form part of the Russian Union of Journalists, which was founded on November 13, 1918 during the first meeting of Soviet journalists.
