First session of Russia-Belarus chief editors club held in Belarus

The sides discussed the role of media in further development of economic integration, protection and improvement of joint cultural, intellectual and social space

MINSK, November 13. /TASS/. The first session of the Russia-Belarus Chief Editors Club took place on Tuesday in the Belarusian state residence Viskuli, the Belarusian Ministry of Information stated.

The chief editors of both countries’ leading media outlets have discussed the role of media in further development of economic integration, protection and improvement of joint cultural, intellectual and social space of Russia and Belarus.

"We are not politicians, but the media creates policy. The analysis of events and the angle of presentation have a colossal significance today. We live in an age when information becomes a key instrument, which is why it is very important to consolidate the people that form public opinion," Gennady Davydko, Deputy Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Council of the Republic of Belarus on Regional Policy stated, cited by the BELTA news agency.

TASS First Deputy Director General Mikhail Gusman noted the importance of honest and direct dialogue between Russian and Belarusian media. "There is nothing better than professional dialogue. We can talk for a long time about some slogans, high matters, but life is always offering new challenges, new tasks," Gusman said. "Of course, the way it will be presented in the media depends on the people who call themselves the leaders of public opinion."

Heads of Russian and Belarusian media established the Russia-Belarus Chief Editors Club, which unites the leading representatives of both countries’ media outlets. The members of the club agreed that it would be open and public. The editors plan to invite Russian and Belarusian politicians and experts to the club’s meetings.
