No time to stay home and recover: Nearly 80% of Russians don’t take sick leave when ill

About 80% of Russians do not take sick leave and go to work even if they feel under the weather

MOSCOW, November 12. /TASS/. About 80% of Russians do not take sick leave and go to work even if they feel under the weather, a recent survey conducted by the Rabota.ru job website revealed.

"Only 8% of Russians always stay at home when they are sick. As many as 77% do not take any sick days and go to work when they are ill, while 7% have an opportunity to make an arrangement with their bosses and work at home. In 8% of cases, our fellow countrymen said they never got sick, went in for sports, consumed vitamins, asked for a one or two days off to be subtracted from their vacation or switched shifts with co-workers," the survey said.

Among the most widespread reasons for Russians’ refusal to take sick leave are fear of losing their job, low-paid sick leaves, absence of a co-worker who could replace them and substantial wage losses. "It is noteworthy that our fellow countrymen are honest workers. Only 5% said they paid for their sick leaves to sort out their personal issues, while all the rest answered in the negative," the survey’s results said.

The company interviewed 6,000 people aged 18 and over in all Russia’s federal districts during a survey conducted in October. Rabota.ru is a job search and recruitment website, one of the leaders in the online recruitment market. Nearly 200,000 vacancies and over 10 million CVs have been posted on that website to date.
