ROSTOV-ON-DON, November 2. /TASS/. The wife of Russian pilot Konstantin Yaroshenko, jailed in the US, hopes for his release ahead of time or extradition to Russia after Russian human rights ombudswoman Tatiana Moskalkova addresses the US authorities on this matter in 2019.

Earlier on Friday Moskalkova announced her plans to address the US authorities next year with a request to allow Yaroshenko's extradition to Russia. "We are constantly communicating with Tatyana Moskalkova and are very grateful to her for her support. We want to address her again before the upcoming meeting between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump and ask for the inclusion of the issue of Konstantin’s transfer in the agenda. Konstantin’s health is deteriorating, and his further stay on US territory without medical treatment may cause serious effects," she added.

Viktoria Yaroshenko noted that "in April, they will decide whether to allow his extradition." "Maybe some agreement will be reached," she said.

She added that Konstantin is still not getting any medical assistance. He acquired problems with digestion and teeth after being subjected to torture in Liberia.

Konstantin Yaroshenko was convicted in the United States in September 2011 and sentenced to 20 years in prison. The pilot was clandestinely transferred to the United States from Liberia, where he had been arrested in May 2010. Agents of the US Drug Enforcement Administration operating under cover allegedly exposed Yaroshenko’s criminal intention to transport a large batch of cocaine. He pleaded innocent, described his arrest as a set-up and said all charges against him were fabricated.

Until recently, Yaroshenko had been serving out his sentence at the Fort Dix Federal Correctional Institution, but in mid-June he was first transferred to a transit prison in Brooklyn, New York, and then to the current Danbury prison, which holds more than 1,400 inmates.

Russia has repeatedly requested the United States to extradite Yaroshenko.

Viktoria together with her daughter Yekaterina first visited her husband in August. The first meeting between the spouses since Konstantin's arrest occurred on August 24 and lasted for around eight hours. On September 11, Viktoria and Yekaterina returned to Russia.
