CIS Anti-Terrorism Center, UN Office of Counter-Terrorism agree to cooperate

The sides have signed the respective memorandum

MOSCOW, November 1. /TASS/. The Anti-Terrorism Center of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS ATC) and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism have agreed to develop cooperation.

The CIS ATC press service told TASS that the center’s head, Andrei Novikov, and Under-Secretary-General of the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism Vladimir Voronkov signed the Memorandum of Understanding between the UN represented by its Office of Counter-Terrorism and the CIS Anti-Terrorism Center. The signing was held in Tashkent, which is hosting the international conference of the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (RATS SCO) dubbed "Fighting against Terrorism: Boundless Cooperation."

In the memorandum, the sides stated their intention to provide effective coordination, with regard to the common interests of the organizations in consolidating cooperation in the war on terror and wishing to promote the goals stipulated in the UN Charter and the corresponding resolutions of the UN General Assembly and Security Council, as well as the CIS’ principles and obligations.

"The sides will get the chance to initiate joint projects and programs in the fight against terrorism to support the balanced implementation of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, share information, hold joint events and consultations on counter-terrorism, fight against its financing, security and border management, countering the use of the Internet for terrorist purposes, as well as providing protection for critical facilities," the CIS ATC reported.
