Russian foreign minister notes Annan’s contribution to strengthening UN international role

Lavrov noted the significant contribution that Annan made to the strengthening of the UN’s central role in international affairs

MOSCOW, August 18. /TASS/. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has noted former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan’s contribution to strengthening the central role of the UN in international affairs in a publication on the ministry’s website on Saturday, which informs that Lavrov has sent a message to the current UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in relation to Annan’s death.

"In his message, [Lavrov] noted the significant contribution that Annan made to the strengthening of the UN’s central role in international affairs, reforming the organization in order to build its authority and create opportunities for long-term resolution of global issues on the basis of the rule of law and respect for fundamental goals and principles of the UN Charter," the message informs.

Lavrov also noted that after resigning, Annan continued his efforts aimed at resolving acute modern crises as part of The Elders (international non-governmental organization of public figures with experience of peaceful conflict regulation and protection of human rights in crises).

The seventh Secretary General of the UN Kofi Annan has died at the age of 80, the politician’s family informed on Saturday in a statement on his Twitter page. He served as UN Secretary General from 1997 to 2006, and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001.
