MOSCOW, July 25. /TASS/. A corrections officer at Penal Colony Number Six in Russia’s Bryansk Region, suspected of using violence against an inmate that led to the prisoner’s death, has been sacked from the Federal Penitentiary Service, a law enforcement source told TASS on Wednesday.

"He has been dismissed from corrections agencies," the source said.

According to investigators, on the night of July 22, the officer forcibly wrapped an inmate’s face in a cloth, which resulted in the prisoner suffocating to death.

The suspect has been detained and a criminal case has been launched under the Russian Criminal Code’s article on "exceeding official authority." A decision is pending on what measure of restraint is to be taken.

According to sources in the Federal Penitentiary Service, an internal probe was conducted into the incident.
