A woman and a child in the apartment were not injured

MOSCOW, May 25./TASS/. The man, who took several people hostage and killed one of them in a Moscow apartment on Thursday, has been detained, a spokesperson for the Russian Interior Ministry’s Moscow department told TASS.

"Today, as a result of a joint operation by the police and the Russian Guard, the man who took a family of three hostage in an apartment of a residential house <…> was detained. During the detention, the man wounded himself with a knife," the source said, adding that the attacker had earlier inflicted a fatal wound on the male hostage.

"A woman and a child in the apartment were not injured," he added.

Earlier reports said the man had fired several shots at the apartment’s ceiling.

An emergencies source the man was possibly in the state of intoxication.

According to a law-enforcement official, the conflict could be sparked by a property row betwen the attacker and a family who earlier bought a room in his apartment.

"Initial information suggests that a son, who had a conflict with his father, had sold his share in the apartment to people, not related to their family, who attempted to evict the father from the apartment," the official said.

An investigation into the incident continues.
