Moscow City Court to consider appeal challenging court ruling to block Telegram on June 14

On April 13, Moscow’s Tagansky District Court upheld the Russian telecom watchdog’s motion to block access to the cloud-based instant messaging service in Russia

MOSCOW, May 18. /TASS/. The Moscow City Court will consider an appeal lodged by Telegram’s representatives to challenge that court’s ruling to block the messenger in Russia, the court’s press service told TASS on Friday.

"Moscow’s Tagansky Court has received an appeal challenging the court decision dated April 13 on Roskomnadzor’s (Russia’s Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media - TASS) claim against Telegram messenger. The received appeal has been set for hearing in the Moscow City Court on June 14 at 9:20 a.m. Moscow time," Court Spokesperson Ulyana Solopova told TASS.

She added that the appeal concerns the regulator’s satisfied claim and its immediate execution.

On April 13, Moscow’s Tagansky District Court upheld the Russian telecom watchdog’s motion to block access to the cloud-based instant messaging service in Russia for its failure to provide the keys to decrypt user messages to the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB). Telegram said this demand was impossible to comply with technically, since the keys are stored on user devices.
