YEREVAN, May 7. /TASS/. Serj Tankian, a popular US rock musician and singer of the Armenian origin, has arrived in Yerevan to support the opposition movement, as he said earlier, a TASS correspondent reported from Yerevan’s Zvartnots international airport on Monday.
Tankian was welcomed by opposition leader and candidate for Armenian prime minister Nikol Pashinyan.
Later in the day, Tankian is expected to take part in an opposition rally in central Yerevan.
Tankian enjoys enormous popularity in Armenia. He is best known as the lead vocalist, songwriter, keyboardist, and occasional live rhythm guitarist of the alternative metal band System of a Down, formed in 1994. His songs were regularly played during protest rallies in Yerevan. His previous tour to Armenia took place in April 2015, when his concert brought together about 50,000 people.
On Tuesday, Armenia’s parliament will elect the country’s prime minister. Pashinyan is the sole candidate.
