Russian scientists test new remote-control technology for manipulating robots in space

The new method helps overcome the problem of signal delays, when transmitting over vast distances from the Earth

MOSCOW, March 3. /TASS/ Researchers from the Far East Federal University (FEFU) have concluded tests on a brand-new, innovative technology for remotely controlling robotechnics far away from the Earth surface, the FEFU press office reported.

"The new method helps overcome the problem of signal delays, when transmitting over vast distances from the Earth," the press office announced.

For the task, scientists suggested controlling robots not by commands in real-time mode but by using mini-programs where a mechanism with artificial intelligence can put itself into operation off-line. From time to time, new programs are sent to the robot and it carries them out taking into account possible hindrances under uncertainty.

During the course of the research, groups of robots were created in Moscow and Vladivostok. The robots within the group could be clearly classified into leaders and followers. The control of groups was done alternatively from different parts of the country. The leaders received mini-programs to execute a given mission and redirected the problem to their subordinates who did the job. Herein, the leader with artificial intelligence observed the group and corrected the tasks for those robots who experienced some problems. After completing the work, the leader sent the information to the operator who, in turn, depending on the level of completion, sent back a new program.

In the future, the researchers are planning to broaden such experiments and conduct them together with colleagues from other countries. The scientists believe such an approach may offer great prospects for creating robots to investigate other planets, like Mars.
