MOSCOW, June 17 /TASS/. A group of Russian doctors have received the annual medial award "Prizvaniye" (Vocation) for carrying out the world’s first face transplant operation in May 2015, the Russian Defense Ministry press and information service said.
The doctors transplanted the face tissue together with the cartilages and the mucous membrane of the nose to a 19-year-old patient, who suffered an electric trauma, at the Naval Military Academy named after Kirov. The operation lasted for more than 24 hours.
The 19-year-old young man is taking a rehabilitation course and is preparing for entrance exams to an institution of high learning.
The Vocation award is given to the best doctors of Russia every year.
