Hainan's Yazhou Bay Science Cluster granted status of national innovation center

According to Hainan Daily, this will allow the science and technology park to attract more specialists in seed breeding, oceanology and the digital economy

SANYA, April 30. /TASS/. The Yazhou Agricultural Science and Technology Cluster in Sanya city (southern China's Hainan province) has received the status of a national offshore innovation and entrepreneurship center for foreign highly qualified personnel, the Hainan Daily reported.

This status is awarded by the China Association for Science and Technology. To date, it has been awarded to 30 industrial parks in China, 2 of which are located in Hainan.

According to the publication, this will allow the Yazhou Bay cluster to attract more specialists in the field of seed production, oceanology, digital economy and other industries.

The Yazhou Agricultural Science and Technology Cluster was established in 2019. It has a total area of about 70 square kilometers. The agricultural park includes the Nanfang agricultural selective breeding base: scientists have been able to develop more than 20,000 new crop varieties there, which is about 70% of China's nationwide figure.

On June 1, 2020, the Central Committee of the Communist Party and the State Council of China published a program creating the Hainan free trade port. The document provides for the establishment of a special customs zone on this tropical island. The PRC authorities plan to complete the construction of a free port on the territory of the province in 2025, when the island is expected to have a a developed system of free trade and investment. By 2035, Hainan plans to offer freedom of trade and investment, cross-border capital movement, travel, and cargo transportation.
