Russian, Chinese scientists to cooperate in exploring Tibetan Plateau

The sides are planning to to sign the relevANT document in July, when the Chinese Academy of Sciences' head visits Russia

MOSCOW, March 25. /TASS/. The Russian and Chinese Academies of Sciences plan to sign an agreement on cooperation in exploring the Tibetan Plateau in July 2019, Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) President Alexander Sergeyev told TASS on Monday.

"We have agreed with our Chinese colleagues that we will add a document to the cooperation agreement the two Academies signed earlier, which will concern the Tibetan Plateau. We plan to sign this document in July, when the Chinese Academy of Sciences head will visit Russia," he said.

According to Sergeyev, this kind of exploration is important for understanding climate change processes. "Our Chinese partners call the Tibetan Plateau the third pole because the region is deeply woven into the planetary climate system. Many rivers, which provide water to most of humankind, originate on the plateau, nearby mountains and glaciers. It is important to understand the details of global climate change processes, so these activities will allow us to get closer to obtaining an overall picture of climate and weather processes going on in the world," Sergeyev pointed out.

The RAS president also said that the Chinese had invited Russian scientists to participate in an mission to the South China sea and Russia responded by inviting Chinese researchers to join an Arctic expedition. "One of the two expeditions’ goals is to detect methane emission sources, which is directly connected to climate change," Sergeyev emphasized.
