Snowmobile expedition team gets to Russia’s northernmost city

KRASNOYARSK, March 21. /TASS/. The team of the Northern Path 2019 expedition on snowmobiles reached Pevek (the Chukotka Region) - Russia’s northernmost city, the project’s coordinator Igor Smolin told TASS on Wednesday.

The expedition of 17,000km, which started from Murmansk on January 11, crosses Russia’s eight regions.

"The trip to Pevek was fine, the travelers have covered about 10,500km," he said. "The forecast for tomorrow says the wind will be milder, and the team plans to move further on along the shore - to Billings, the Cape Schmidt, and to Uelen - the easternmost settlement on the Bering Strait."

Later on, the route will take the travelers to Anadyr.

"There, they will have to decide how to get to Kamchatka - depending on conditions of Kamchatka’s rivers," the coordinator said, adding "I hope, they will manage it before the spring’s active phase."

Three travelers from Magnitogorsk - Alexander Tabakov, the leader, navigator Gennady Chernukha and mechanic Evgeny Berdnikov - plan to cross the Russian Arctic from Murmansk to Kamchatka within three months. The expedition participants are experienced travelers.
