Russian scientists to test telemedical technologies in experiment for future lunar flights

The tests will be carried out during the SIRIUS isolation experiment, which will be held on the premises of the Institute of Biomedical Problems

MOSCOW, January 22. /TASS/. New equipment, telemedical technologies and the techniques of first medical aid provision in a deep space flight will be tested during the SIRIUS isolation experiment, Head of the Immune System Physiology Lab at the Institute of Biomedical Problems, Project Scientific Coordinator Sergei Ponomaryov said on Tuesday.

During the experiment, the scientists are planning to practice many medical aspects of future lunar and Martian missions, he said.

"If we speak about the Moon, this relates to telemedical technologies when a doctor who stays outside a hermetically sealed craft will be able to see information online on what takes place inside the craft. And a doctor who stays inside the hermetically sealed craft will consult with the specialist," the scientist said.

During the SIRIUS experiment that will be held on the premises of the Institute of Biomedical Problems, crewmembers will talk in the course of such telemedical link-ups with doctors staying in the clinic of the president’s property management department," Ponomaryov said.

Besides, the crewmembers will test new medical techniques of providing assistance, the scientist said.

"If something happens precisely to a doctor, then the other crewmembers who have little to do with medicine, should be able to provide first medical aid. In the first place, they will practice the cases with injuries," the scientist said, adding that options were also considered for rendering medical assistance during heart attacks or strokes because even though the healthiest people are selected for space flights, no one can guarantee avoiding particular events, especially during inter-planetary flights.

The scientists also intend to test promising scientific equipment, Ponomaryov said.

"New equipment in the sphere of biochemical research will be tested along with new-generation biochemical analyzers, which will be subsequently delivered to a space station. Possibly, equipment will be tested that will be used for immunology research," Ponomaryov said, noting that this equipment will be supplied for lunar missions.

Currently, a series of experiments called SIRIUS (Scientific International Research in Unique Terrestrial Station) is being implemented on Earth to prepare for deep space flights, in the first place, to the Deep Space Gateway. The experiment for the 4-month isolation will begin in March 2019. The scenario of the experiment will simulate a flight to the Moon: the travel to the Earth’s natural satellite and a flight around it to search for a landing place, the landing of four crewmembers for operations on the surface, the stay in the Moon’s orbit and the remote control of a lunar rover to prepare a base and return to Earth.
