Russian newspapers are giving sweeping comments on the assassination of US Ambassador Chris Stevens in Libya and the storming of the US Embassy in Cairo by a group of demonstrators. The fact that a film, which, according to the Muslims, mars Prophet Mohammed, was issued in the United States, caused loud anti-US actions.
But whether the spark of fury for the US in the countries, where the Arab Spring broke out that Washington supports actively, came so unexpected? the Russian pro-governmental newspaper Rossiiskaya Gazeta daily contemplated. It looks like the connections are leading to a notorious US pastor Terry Jones or his disciples. The priest, who is running in the US presidential elections as an independent candidate, “glorified himself” with regular burning of the Koran and anti-Islamic sermons. After each such incident hundreds and thousands of people, who voiced their indignation and scorn to the US, came to the streets. In the spring of the previous year another act of Koran’s burning by Jones led to a bloody massacre in the Afghan city Mazar-e-Sharif. Before September 11 a 14-minute very unprofessionally filmed video “Mohammed – prophet of the Muslims” was posted in the video hosting YouTube, which showed the life of the prophet and the rise of Islam in the satirical way. But the pastor explained that the main idea of the film is not to bad mouth the Muslims, but to show “a destructive ideology of their faith.” But even if artistic abilities of the pastor do not make him possible to get above obscenity, the newspaper reported.
He could have hardly become popular but for the Egyptian television. The Egyptian television has been broadcasting some pieces from the video for several days with the comments of the Islamists, who voiced hatred to the Coptic Christians, the Jews and the Americans. It is unsurprisingly that finally this fact resulted in an attack on the US embassy in Cairo and then in the Libyan city Benghazi.
The tragic incident also can affect the presidential campaign in the US, the newspaper believes. Republican candidate Mitt Romney, the main rival of the incumbent US president, has already criticized the US authorities for “a too mild” response to the attack.
The observers noted that this was the Islamic militants who were the striking force of rebellious units during the civil war in Libya and received a strong support from the West, the Nezavisimaya Gazeta daily reported. The experts warned that the events in Cairo and Benghazi can be a well-plotted provocative act, which was seeking to make an abyss between the US and the Islamic world wider. For ordinary US citizens these incidents are the protect actions of the fanatics, who marked September 11 in this way. The Muslims took the film as a distorted manifestation of Western liberalism, which permits the encroachment on the faith of other people under the pretext of the respect for freedom.
The attack of the US diplomatic mission in Benghazi became the most blatant anti-US action in the Arab Spring countries, where the overthrow of “secular dictators” led not to the triumph of democracy, but to stronger positions of the Islamists and the radicalization of a substantial part of the population, the Kommersant daily reported. This is an alarming signal for Washington, as after the toppling of Muammar Gaddafi, who was famous for his anti-US position, the attitude to the US in Libya did not improve, but even deteriorated. In the Jamahiriya times after Washington and Tripoli restored diplomatic relations in 2006, no one attacked the US diplomatic missions and the US diplomats were not killed.
