Russia to start producing world’s first gas-fueled locomotives next year

The first natural gas-fueled locomotive was produced this year

BRYANSK, September 25. /TASS/. Russia’s Bryansk Machine Building Plant (BMZ) will start producing world’s first TEM-19 liquefied natural gas-fueled locomotives next year. Several locomotives will be produced by order of Russian Railways, BMZ Chief Executive Officer Alexander Vasilenko told TASS on Friday.

"This year we produced the world’s first and single natural gas-fueled locomotive. We will make several more such locomotives next year by order of Russian Railways," Vasilenko said.

BMZ is ready to produce 50-150 gas-fueled locomotives but the process is hampered by lack of LNG filling stations chain on domestic railways.

The gas-fueled locomotive project is implemented jointly with Russian Railways within the framework of the government’s assignment on conversion of domestic transport to gas fuel, Vasilenko added.
