New advanced escort ship floated out for Russian Navy in Kaliningrad

The Admiral Makarov is slated for delivery in 2016

KALININGRAD, September 2. /TASS/. The Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad floated out on Wednesday the Admiral Makarov advanced escort ship that is under construction for the Russian Navy Black Sea Fleet, the company’s press officer, Sergei Mikhailov, told TASS.

"The Project 11356 Admiral Makarov escort ship is the third in the family of six frigates being constructed by the Kaliningrad shipbuilders for the Russian Navy", Mikhailov said.

The Admiral Makarov was designed by the Severnoye Design Bureau in St. Petersburg and laid down by Yantar on February 29, 2012.

"To date, the frigate’s hull has been manufactured and most of the systems and assemblies have been installed", the shipyard’s press officer said. The Admiral Makarov is slated for delivery in 2016.

The first two ships in the series - the Admiral Grigorovich and Admiral Essen - are in trials now. Their delivery to the Navy is planned for the fourth quarter of 2015. The series will enter service with Russia’s Black Sea Fleet.

The Project 11356 frigate has a displacement of 4,000 tons, a speed of 30 knots, an endurance of 30 days and a crew of about 200. The ship’s weapons suite comprises extended-range cruise missiles, a 100-mm versatile gun, a Kortik surface-to-air missile system, 544-mm torpedo tubes, an RBU-6000 antisubmarine rocket launcher, and an antisubmarine helicopter as well.

The ship is designed for naval warfare both as part of a naval task force and independently. Its weapons allow elimination of hostile surface combatants and submarines, repel air attacks and provide fire support for amphibious landing.
