MOSCOW, August 18. /TASS/. Russian Railways President Vladimir Yakunin submitted all necessary documents to register as a candidate to the post of senator, and Kaliningrad Region’s local election commission is checking their compliance with laws, press secretary of Kaliningrad’s acting governor Larisa Polyakova told TASS on Tuesday.

Kaliningrad Region’s Acting Governor Nikolay Tsukanov earlier nominated Yakunin for the post in the Federation Council upper house of parliament. Yakunin’s press secretary confirmed that he gave his written consent to become a candidate to the post of the senator from the Kaliningrad region. Other candidates for the post are Mayor of Kaliningrad Alexander Yaroshuk and the current member of the Federation Council Oleg Tkach.

"We did our part. The candidate collected documents, submitted them to election commission. They are checking the documents now," Polyakova said adding that Kaliningrad’s acting governor will be informed after a decision made on registering Yakunin as a candidate.

Under the Russian law, newly elected leaders of the regions appoint the representatives to the Federation Council. A governor appoints a senator not later than the next day after his inauguration.

The election of the governor of the Kaliningrad region will be held on September 13.

On Monday, Vadim Tyulpanov, head of the Federation Council Committee, said that Yakunin would have to leave the Russian Railways if he is elected as a member of the Federation Council.
