MOSCOW, June 24. /TASS/. The Visa Information System (VIS) of the Schengen Area members will become operational in Russia on September 14, 2015, the European Union’s Ambassador to Russia Vygaudas Usackas said on Wednesday.
He noted that the VIS was a system of "exchanging visa data between Schengen States, which adhered to the common visa policy." "This implies the exchange of information on persons applying for visas," he added.
"The VIS system is designed to simply visa procedures, enhance the security of visa application and simplify visa control at the external borders of the Schengen Area," Usackas said. "The system works with biometric data - fingerprints and digital images."
