Russian Air Force begins exercise in Southern Military District

The exercise will involve about 40 Sukhoi Su-25 attack aircraft and more than 20 Su-27, Su-30 and MiG-29 fighters, as well as the Mil Mi-8 transport and combat helicopters

MOSCOW, June 16. /TASS/. Three-day exercises involving more than 60 warplanes and more than 10 helicopters started in Russia’s Southern Military District on Tuesday, the district’s press service reported. More than 500 pilots, flight engineers and ground service specialists from military units of the Krasnodar and Stavropol territories and the Rostov region are taking part in the manoeuvres.

In total, the exercise will involve about 40 Sukhoi Su-25 attack aircraft and more than 20 Su-27, Su-30 and MiG-29 fighters, as well as the Mil Mi-8 transport and combat helicopters.

"The pilots will drill air combat manoeuvring. In addition, at the Kopanskoi and Arzgirsky ranges in the Krasnodar and Stavropol regions, the attack aircraft crews will conduct reconnaissance flights and launch unguided missiles, drop high-explosive bombs and fire aerial cannons on targets simulating the positions and military equipment column of an imaginary enemy," the military district sources said.
