Russian gay rights activist jailed for disobeying police

Alexeyev and other gay rights activists were detained on Saturday after trying to stage a gay pride parade banned by the Moscow City Hall

MOSCOW, June 1. /TASS/. A Moscow court has sentenced Russian gay rights activist Nikolay Alexeyev to ten days in jail for disobeying police orders, a court spokespesron said on Monday.

"He has been given ten days of administrative arrest," the spokesperson said.

Alexeyev and other gay rights activists were detained on Saturday after trying to stage a gay pride parade banned by the Moscow City Hall.

Alexeyev drove a quad bike to the City Hall's headquarters on Tverskaya Square in downtown Moscow lighting up a fireball and smoke pellets.

He was attacked by gay parade opponents who blocked traffic on Tverskaya Street, Moscow's central thoroughfare.
