Russia’s Interior Ministry carries out procedure of Polonsky’s deportation

"The plane with Polonsky and a group of Interior Ministry officers on board has left the territory of Cambodia," he said

HANOI, May 17. /TASS/. Russian businessman Sergey Polonsky has been deported from Cambodia to Russia on Sunday, a source in the kingdom’s law enforcement agencies told TASS.

"The plane with Polonsky and a group of Interior Ministry officers on board has left the territory of Cambodia," he said.

Director of the kingdom’s Immigration Department Sok Phal told reporters on Saturday that the Cambodian authorities were planning to deport Polonsky as soon as possible. In accordance with Cambodia’s immigration law, a foreign national may be deported from the country if he violates the visa regime, is engaged in labor activity without a permit or poses a threat to security and public order. According to Sok Phal, Polonsky is charged with violations of all three counts. He lived in Cambodia with a visa that expired two years ago, was engaged in illegal business activities and repeatedly violated public order.

The businessman whose extradition Russia was seeking was arrested on May 15 on his own yacht a few dozen kilometers off the coast of the city of Sihanoukville along with his five assistants. His detention was preceded by an appeal of the Cambodian Interior Ministry to the country’s Ministry of Justice to review Polonsky’s case with due account of Russia’s second inquiry regarding his extradition. The Interpol issued a wanted notice for Polonsky at the request of Russia’s Interior Ministry. In Russia, the businessman is a defendant in the criminal cases of embezzlement of funds of interest holders in the construction of the Rublyovo Riviera and Kutuzov Mile residential complexes.

A district court in Moscow has charged him in absentia with fraud on a large scale carried out by an organized group. In response to Russia’s first request to extradite the businessman a local court ruled that Polonsky could not be extradited to Russia, since a criminal case had been opened against him in the country on bodily blows to local citizens.

Last December, the Russian side against sent a request to the Cambodian authorities regarding Polonsky’s extradition.
