Over 12 million people take part in Victory Day celebrations in Russia

The Great Patriotic War is a term used in Russia and other former Soviet republics to describe hostilities on the eastern fronts of World War II in 1941-1945

MOSCOW, May 9. /TASS/. More than 12 million people have taken part in celebrations dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s Victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, Russian Interior Ministry spokeswoman Yelena Alexeyeva said Saturday.

"As of 20:00 Moscow Time [17:00 UTC], over 12 million people took part in festive events devoted to the 70th anniversary of the [Soviet Union's] Victory [over Nazi Germany] in the Great Patriotic War," Alexeyeva said.

The Great Patriotic War is a term used in Russia and other former Soviet republics to describe hostilities on the eastern fronts of World War II in 1941-1945.

She said Victory Day celebrations in Russia continue.
