Russian Northern Fleet confirms combat capability — defense minister

A snap combat readiness inspection was for the first time conducted at the base of the Russian National Defense Control Center and at the military districts’ regional centers this year

MOSCOW, May 5. /TASS/. The newly formed Strategic Command of Russia’s Northern Fleet during the winter training period has confirmed its combat capability, Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said on Tuesday.

The minister said during a conference call with the leadership of the Armed Forces at the National Defense Control Center that a snap combat readiness inspection during the winter training period checked the forces of the newly formed Northern Fleet Strategic Command. "All the drills [during the check] were conducted in adverse climatic conditions," General Shoigu said. "The Northern Fleet has confirmed its combat capability as a result," he added.

According to the minister, a command post troop control exercise was conducted during the winter period "to drill actions of the central military command agencies and military districts in the training and use of the Armed Forces." "The exercise was for the first time conducted at the base of the Russian National Defense Control Center and at the military districts’ regional centers in a single control configuration," Shoigu said.

He said that the Southern Military District had an operational mobilization training involving the senior staff of the Defense Ministry and strategic commands. "The drill included a demonstration of the military district’s operational personnel work with the use of a new hardware-software decision-making support system," the defense minister said.
