Russia’s ministry of justice cancels registration of Navalny’s party

"The ministry of justice has taken a decision to exclude information about this party and its structural divisions from the Uniform State Register of Legal Entities," the ministry’s press service said

MOSCOW, April 28. /TASS/. Russia’s ministry of justice has revoked registration of Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny’s party, the Party of Progress, the ministry’s press service told TASS on Tuesday.

"The ministry of justice has taken a decision to recognize the document of state registration of the political party Party of Progress as invalid and to exclude information about this party and its structural divisions from the Uniform State Register of Legal Entities," the press service said.

The party was registered on February 19, 2014. "Under the federal law on political parties, a political party is to carry out state registration of its regional branches in at least half of Russia’s constituent regions within six months after the date of state registration of the party," the ministry said.

In October 2014, representatives of the party reported to the ministry of justice about the registration of 44 regional branches but only 16 regions branches were registered within the due period of six months. Three more regional branches were registered beyond that period, after territorial department of the Russian ministry of justice had ruled to suspend state registration of regional branches.

In 25 regions, branches were registered beyond the six-month period. The party appealed to courts to recognize the ruling of the justice ministry’s territorial departments as invalid.

"By now, court rulings recognizing the actions of the justice ministry’s territorial departments as legitimate have come into force. In this connection, the Russian ministry of justice took a decision to recognize the document of state registration of the political party Party of Progress as invalid and to exclude information about this party and its structural divisions from the Uniform State Register of Legal Entities," the press service said.
