MOSCOW, April 24. /TASS/. Two gunmen who offered resistance to law enforcement officers were killed in Russia’s North Caucasus republic of Dagestan during a special operation on Friday, the National Anti-Terrorism Committee has said.

The counter-terrorism operation was launched at 5:30 a.m. Moscow time (0230 GMT) after the members of an illegal armed group were located near the Novy Paraul village, in the Karabudakhkent district.

The officers blocked the building where the gunmen were hiding. "The bandits opened fire from a grenade launcher and automatic weapons against the law enforcement officers who attempted to detain them," the committee said.

The criminals were neutralized during the fighting, and their bodies are being identified. A large amount of ammunition, two assault rifles and a sniper rifle were seized. "An active phase of a special operation continues," the committee said.

A source in the republic’s law enforcement agencies earlier told TASS three people were neutralized during the special operation in the Karabudakhkent district. The report is being verified.
