Putin hands over to Greek PM icon stolen by Nazis during WWII — Kremlin spokesman

The icon of St.Nicholas and St.Spiridon was stolen by Nazis from a Greek church and taken to Germany

MOSCOW, April 9. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin has handed over to Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras an icon depicting St.Nicholas and St.Spiridon, which was seized by Nazis during World War II, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday.

"This icon was stolen by Nazis from a Greek church and taken to Germany," Peskov said adding that the thief was later arrested by Red Army soldiers and handed over to Greek authorities who ordered his execution in 1947.

"The icon was purchased by philantropists from the family" and returned where it belongs, Peskov said.

Tsipras is currently in Russia on a two-day visit. On Wednesday he held talks with Putin.
