MOSCOW/IVANOVO, March 30. /TASS/. A truck driver has been sentenced to three years in prison for killing a travelling American cyclist in a hit-and-run accident in Russia's central Ivanovo Region, a local court said on Monday.

Nikolay Maximov was driving drunk on July 24 last year when he hit the 60-year old cyclist, Ron McGerity, who was travelling around the Russian Golden Ring (Ivanovo, Vladimir, Suzdal and other ancient cities northeast of Moscow).

McGerity visited 61 countries in 15 years travelling by a Swiss bicycle of a unique design that allowed him to carry bags and ride in a reclined position. He named himself a peace messenger and gave so-called 'letters of peace' to mayors of the cities he had visited.
