Construction of two corvettes for Russian Navy to start in St. Petersburg on Friday

Electronic equipment of the vessels will excel that of their already operating analogues

MOSCOW, February 17. /TASS/. Construction of two new corvettes for the Russian Navy will be started in Russia's second-biggest city of St. Petersburg on Friday, February 20, Russian Navy spokesman Captain 1st Rank Igor Dygalo said on Tuesday.

Dygalo said electronic equipment of these ships would excel that of their already operating analogues.

Navy’s Commander-in-Chief Admiral Viktor Chirkov and fleet officership will take part in the keel-laying ceremony for the Retiviy and Strogiy corvettes of Project 20380, Dygalo said.

Another two corvettes of this type will be shortly built and handed over to the Pacific Fleet from the Amur shipyard.

Project 20380 corvettes are ships for littoral zone operations, capable of fighting surface ships and submarines as well as providing gun support to landing operations. The Russian fleet has four corvettes of this type - Steregushchiy, Soobrazitelnyy, Boikiy and Stoikiy.
