First ever official celebrations of Day of State Flag held in Crimea

SIMFEROPOL, January 19. /TASS/. The first ever official celebrations of Day of State Flag of the Republic of Crimea have been held in central square in Simferopol on Monday. Representatives of the "Russian Community of Crimea" public organization, servicemen of people's defense, members of the "Young League" Crimean organization of the United Russia party and city residents are taking part in the celebrations, CrimeaInform news agency said.

Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of Crimea Mikhail Sheremet addressed a gala meeting, saying that "the colors of the Crimean flag symbolize the heroic past of the Crimean people, their hopes and aspirations and a multiple national identity of the population of Crimea." "Today's celebrations have imbued us with a feeling of respect for the national symbols and the realization of being associated with our great country, and have united all the people who live in Crimea. We are tone nation," Sheremet said. A huge, meters-long banner representing all the colors of the flag of the Republic of Crimea was hoisted in Lenin Square in Simferopol.

In April 1999, the Crimean parliament adopted a resolution “On the flag of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea," which endorsed its shape, the colors of the Crimean flag and its status.

In October 2008, the Crimean parliament declared January 19 Day of the Flag of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. A bill on national holidays and memorable dates adopted on December 24, 2014 officially declared January 19 Day of State Flag of the republic.
