10 militants killed in counterterrorism operation in Grozny

MOSCOW, December 4. /TASS/. Ten militants have been killed in Grozny, the capital of Russia's North Caucasus republic of Chechnya, Russia’s National Antiterrorism Committee (NAC) reported Thursday.

“The inspection of the gunfight site has been completed by now; 10 militants were neutralized as a result of a counterterrorism operation in Grozny,” the NAC told TASS.

The identities of the militants are being established.

“Their possible involvement in other terrorism-related crimes is being checked; further manhunt and investigative activities are being carried out,” the NAC said.

At about 01:00 a.m. Moscow Time Thursday (22:00 UTC Wednesday) a group of unknown assailants riding in three cars attacked a traffic police checkpoint in Grozny. Then militants penetrated the Press House where republican newspapers, web publications and offices of federal media are based, and a school.

Law enforcers blocked the buildings, and a counterterrorism operation was launched in downtown Grozny. The active phase of the operation is over. Earlier, it was reported that the bodies of 8 militants and 24 explosive devices were discovered.

The NAC also said that 10 police officers were killed and 28 wounded during the special operation in Grozny.
