Military drones to be deployed in Russia’s north-east

The new drone control unit will be on duty at Anadyr-Ugolny airbase beginning 2015

MOSCOW, December 2. /TASS/. A special military unit was formed to control drones in an Arctic area in the north-east of Russia, a spokesman for the Eastern Military District told TASS.

The unit is deployed at the Anadyr-Ugolny airbase, he said.

First groups of the permanent deployment personnel have arrived, and remote control operators and commanders are still undergoing training at a special center near Moscow. The unit will be staffed by the end of the year. The force will have several Orlan-10 drones, the official said.

Alexander Gordeyev, the head of the press service said first test flights of Orlans were planned for early next year under lower temperature conditions.

At first the drones will be operated and serviced together with specialists from the plant that made the aerial vehicles.

The new drone control unit will be on duty beginning 2015. A squadron of drones is planned to be deployed at the Anadyr airport, Gordeyev added.
