SOCHI, October 24. /TASS/. Russia provides support for Syria in its fight against Islamism, Russian Vice-Premier Dmitry Rogozin said on Friday.

“Today you have to fight not only the internal enemy. In Syria there are forces that represent radical fundamentalism. These are religious fanatics. Their activity goes beyond the Syrian state. They act in Iran and in other territories. They act with special cruelty,” Rogozin said at talks with the Syrian delegation.

In this case Russia and Syria are on the same side. “We understand the scope of the trouble that Syria faces. We are on your side,” he said.

Russia praises the results of presidential elections in Syria, Rogozin added. Russia believes that the election results have a positive impact on security in the region, the deputy prime minister noted. The first alternative presidential elections were held in Syria on June 3. The Supreme Constitutional Court admitted three candidates. Incumbent President Bashar Assad won in the elections with 88.7% of the vote.
