MOSCOW, September 24. /ITAR-TASS/. The servicemen of the motorized rifle force of the Eastern Military District have repulsed an attack by a landing party of a simulated enemy with field firing at the Uspensky military range /Sakhalin Island/, an official at the Russian Defence Ministry's press service department told ITAR-TASS on Wednesday.
"Within the scope of command and staff exercises Vostok /east/ - 2014, the servicemen of the motorized rifle force of the District set about carrying out a practical phase to repulse a tactical landing party of a simulated enemy with field firing at the Uspensky military range on Sakhalin Island," the Ministry official said. The force had earlier trekked in an integrated way for over 2,000 km from Khabarovsk Territory to Sakhalin Island.
During a training battle, the motorized riflemen, supported by tank and artillery units, defeated the tactical landing party of a simulated enemy. Air cover to the force was provided by aircraft and helicopters of army aviation.
The command of the force used the capability of pilotless flying vehicles and an automated troop control system during the training battle. Motorized-rifle, tank, artillery and anti-aircraft units are used for field firing exercises. Tank crews accomplished gunfire exercises on the move at emerging and moving targets, and destroyed air targets from a tank machine-gun. Fire was conducted at targets imitating a moving tank, an antitank grenade-launcher crew, and an artillery mount.
Artillery men accomplished several fire missions with the conduct of field artillery gunnery in direct laying from closed positions at individual and group targets. The crews of anti-aircraft missile systems, AA gun-and-missile ones, and portable AA missile systems were busy polishing skills in accomplishing tasks to repulse an air raid by individual and group targets without field firing.
The exercises are involving about 100,000 servicemen, up to 1,500 tanks, up to 120 aircraft, and up to 5,000 pieces of armament, military and special-purpose hardware, and up to 70 ships. The Vostok-2014 strategic command and staff exercises will continue till September 25.
