Russian border guards detain Japanese whaling ship

Japanese state fishery agency said the vessel had crossed the Russian border by mistake

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, August 22. /ITAR-TASS/. Russian border guards have detained a Japanese whaling ship in the Sea of Okhotsk, a source of Sakhalin regional security authorities told ITAR-TASS on Friday.

The ship, which was detained by Kamchatka border guards, was on the way to the port of Magadan for further investigation, the source said.

The Japanese state fishery agency said the vessel had crossed the Russian border by mistake.

In March this year, the Hague international court banned Japan from whaling in the Antarctic waters. However, Japan continues to whale for "scientific purposes" in the northern Pacific and the Arctic.
