Communist Party urges Russian leadership to recognize Novorossiya

MOSCOW, August 21. /ITAR-TASS/. The Russian Communist Party on Thursday called for recognizing the independence of Novorossiya, a union of two self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk people's republics in eastern Ukraine.

“It is necessary to support Novorossiya diplomatically and recognize this state, created by the direct expression of people’s will, as a subject of international law,” the party said in a statement.

Nikolai Gubenko, deputy chairman of the Moscow City Duma, said Russia should recognize Novorossiya as it recognized South Ossetia and Abkhazia several years ago. “It (Novorossiya) will know that Russia stands behind it,” he said.
