Russian Army General Staff chief confirms commitment to INF Treaty

MOSCOW, July 31, 21:40 /ITAR-TASS/. The Chairman of the Russian Army General Staff, Colonel-General Valery Gerasimov on Thursday on reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to the INF (Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces) Treaty.

In a telephone conversation with the Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey, Gerasimov “warned his interlocutor from bringing NATO infrastructure closer to the Russian border”, the Defence Ministry press service said.

Commenting on the situation in Ukraine, Gerasimov “assessed the Ukrainian troops’ actions in the conflict area and said the use by the government troops of combat planes, and heavy, including missile, artillery systems against civilians was unacceptable”, the press service said.

“The sides agreed to continue their contacts,” it added.
