MAKHACHKALA, June 26, /ITAR-TASS/. A counterterrorism operation has started in the Tsumadinsky District in the west of the Russian North Caucasus republic of Dagestan and in the town of Derbent on the Caspian Sea, a spokesman for the operational headquarters said Wednesday.
“The regime of a counterterrorism operation was imposed in the district at 22:30 Moscow Time. Manhunt activities designed to neutralize militants are underway,” the spokesman told Itar-Tass, adding that the regime was introduced in Derbent at 23:00 Moscow Time.
Law enforcers blocked a house where suspected militants could be hiding.
Russia’s law enforcement agencies continue fighting militants in Dagestan over 13 years since the battle phase of the second war against Islamist separatists in the neighboring Chechnya came to an end in 2000. Attacks on security officials and civilians occur from time to time in Dagestan, Ingushetia and Kabardino-Balkaria.
