ROSTOV-ON-DON, June 21, /ITAR-TASS/. Unidentified gunmen have attacked another checkpoint on the border with Ukraine and a group of Ukrainian border guards asked Russia for shelter from chasers, the spokesman for the Rostov Region’s border guard service, Vasily Malayev, told ITAR-TASS.
“Unidentified gunmen have attacked the Donetsk (Russia)-Izvarino (Ukraine) checkpoint. At about 22:30 Moscow time Ukrainian border guards from Izvarino came to the Donetsk border checkpoint to seek protection from gunmen who had been chasing them. Some of the Ukrainian border guards were injured,” he said.
After receiving first aid the Ukrainian border guards were taken to the nearest medical establishment in Donetsk, the Rostov Region.
Earlier on Friday there was an armed incident at another checkpoint. Malayev told Itar-Tass there was a clash between people’s militia and Ukrainian troops and National Guard in the area of the Dolzhansky checkpoint on Ukraine’s border with the Rostov Region. The incident occurred at 18.40 Moscow time. Mortar fire from Ukraine damaged buildings, engineering facilities and supply links of the Russian border checkpoint Novoshakhtinsk. A Russian customs officer was injured, a spokesman for Russia’s Southern Customs Department said. He is in grave condition. The checkpoint’s operation was paused.
