“We welcome the sentencing of the organizer, gunman, and three accomplices in the murder of Anna Politkovskaya, but true justice can only be achieved when the masterminds of the crime are identified, prosecuted, and punished,” CPJ Europe and Central Asia Program Coordinator Nina Ognianova said in a statement.
“We urge Russian investigative authorities not to rest until the key culprits are in the dock, answering for this brutal crime,” she said.
An accomplice in the murder, former police officer Sergey Khadzhikurbanov, got 20 years in a penal colony. Brothers of the killer, who spied on the journalist Ibragim and Dzhabrail Makhmudov received 12-and 14-year sentences respectively.
Russian Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said the law enforcement agencies are doing everything possible to establish the mastermind of Politkovskaya’s murder.
Politkovskaya worked for the Novaya Gazeta liberal newspaper.
