The upper houses of Russian and Algerian parliaments agree to promote cooperation

ALGIERS, May 13. /ITAR-TASS/. Valentina Matvienko, the speaker of the Russian Federation Council, and Abdelkader Bensalah, the speaker of the Algerian Council of the Nation, on Tuesday signed a memorandum of cooperation between the upper chambers of Russian and Algerian parliaments.

“The memorandum is aimed at stepping up inter-parliamentary cooperation between Russia and Algeria,” the Russian politician who is on a two-day official visit to Algeria told journalists. The document provides for regular exchanges of visits between the leaderships of the two chambers and the use of parliamentary mechanisms to implement projects and major guidelines of bilateral cooperation, Matvienko said.

The sides are expected to exchange information on their lawmaking activities and parliamentary procedures; cooperate in the creation of favourable conditions for interaction among the houses’ committees; exchange views in questions of law-making, parliamentary control, administrative management and financial support for parliamentary work.

It was decided to set up a group for links with the Russian Federation Council at the Algerian Council of Nation and create a similar group at the upper house of Russian parliament for links with the Algerian Council of Nation.

The sides also agreed to deepen interaction at international parliamentary organizations, of which Russia and Algeria are members.
