Duma elects new ombudsperson

Among candidates are Ella Pamfilova, Yelena Afanasyeva and Oleg Smolin

MOSCOW, March 18. /ITAR-TASS/. The State Duma will elect a new ombudsperson at its session on Tuesday. Vladimir Lukin, who has occupied the post until now, ended his term in office on February 18.

On February 13, President Putin proposed a candidacy of Ella Pamfilova to the post of the Russian ombudsperson. On February 24, the Presidium of the United Russia party at the State Duma supported the candidacy of Ella Pamfilova. The Federation Council (upper chamber), the Russian Public Chamber and A Just Russia faction of the State Duma also approved the proposed candidate.

Apart from Pamfilova, two more candidates - MP Yelena Afanasyeva from LDPR  and Oleg Smolin from the Communist Party, were nominated for the post of the Russian ombudsperson.

The State Duma will elect one of the proposed candidates by secret ballot.
