MOSCOW, March 09 /ITAR-TASS/. Police have detained the driver who ran over a group of people in the early hours of Sunday in the southern Russian city of Voronezh, killing five of them and injuring 10 others, head of the regional police press service Yelena Podtynnykh told Itar-Tass.
The accident occurred at about 03:00 Moscow Standard Time near a city cafe.
The 28-year-old failed to control the Volvo S-70 car, veered into the oncoming lane and then hit a group of people. After the accident, he made a getaway abandoning the car but was later detained by traffic police officers.
According to preliminary data, the driver was alcoholically intoxicated, the press service head said.
Two women and three men died on the spot.
Medical assistance was provided for all the injured and they were taken to a city hospital.
A criminal case was instituted.
