GORKI, February 12. /ITAR-TASS/. Uncontrolled and unjustified increases in gas and electricity consumer tariffs have been condemned by Russian premier Dmitry Medvedev.

"I'd like to underline that uncontrolled and unjustified increases in tariffs for our citizens should not be allowed," Prime Minister Medvedev told a conference on long-term energy pricing policy and cross subsidies on Tuesday.

In Europe, power and gas prices for the population were higher than for industrial companies, he said. "The situation in our country is the other way round. Higher prices for industry help deliver a discount for the population. Russia produces its own gas so European patterns would not fully fit here," the premier said.

He said the cabinet had been developing "social norms" for electricity consumption, on which a decision was expected soon.
