Over 1,000 people ask for temporary asylum in Russia over tense situation in Syria

MOSCOW, January 22. /ITAR-TASS/. More than 1,000 people asked for temporary asylum in Russia over tense situation in Syria, around 500 people were granted asylum, head of the Moscow branch of the Federal Migration Service (FMS) Olga Kirillova said on Wednesday.

“The flow of people asking for temporary asylum over deteriorated public and political situation in the homeland went up sharply in 2013, 478 people were granted temporary asylum,” Kirillova said.

“In October 2013 after a request for political asylum in the FMS service an Egyptian citizen, who was a member of terrorist organisation Al-Qaeda, was detained by operatives of a FMS branch in Moscow and Moscow Region,” the head of the Moscow FMS branch said.
