MOSCOW, January 18, /ITAR-TASS/. Four gunmen have been killed in a special operation in Makhachkala's suburbs, the National Antiterrorism Committee's information centre told Itar-Tass.

An attempt of gunmen to break through the cordon was thwarted. Four criminals were neutralized, a NAC source said.

The house in the village of Semender was blocked on Friday night. After negotiations, a woman with three children came out. The operation was suspended till Saturday morning. However, the gunmen opened fire at night and attempted to break through, but they failed, the source said.

Local gunmen's leader and bandits involved in blasts set off near a restaurant in Makhachkala late on Friday may be among those blocked in the house.

A source at the National Antiterrorism Committee's operational headquarters in Dagestan told Itar-Tass that a counterterrorist operation regime was imposed in the village of Semender at midnight. There was an exchange of fire, he said.

A gunman was killed in another exchange of fire in Dagestan on Friday night. The fighting took place near the settlement of Kichi-Gamri at 23:00. None among law-enforcers was hurt.
