MAKHACHKALA, January 15. /ITAR-TASS/. Three law-enforcers killed in a shootout with militants in Dagestan on Wednesday were members of a special task force unit, a district police official told Itar-Tass.
"According to preliminary information, the SOBR (special rapid response unit) officers were ambushed as they were checking the information about militants' whereabouts," the police official said.
He added that two gunmen were killed in the shootout as well.
"The rest of the gunmen hid in a house which police later blocked. Police and militants are now exchanging fire," the official said.
Another local police source said the casualty toll included five wounded police officers. One of them is in critical condition.
"One of the five wounded police is in critical condition. Doctors are trying to save his life. The lives of his four colleagues are not in danger,” the source said.
